Providing hope for children in the disaster hit areas(2008-05-30)
——Canon donates to build two Hope Schools in earthquake affected areas of Sichuan
Two weeks have passed since the earthquake devastated Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province. Over this period of time, people across the country have united into one astonishingly powerful force in providing assistance to the rescue & relief effort for the earthquake affected areas. The Canon Group has also been keeping a close watch on the relief and rebuilding work in the disaster areas, while it is also doing its best to encourage donations and implement various aid projects.
Due to such a sudden catastrophic disaster, many children in the affected areas have lost their families and their classrooms. To help the affected children go back to school, Canon (China) has decided to team up with theChina Red Cross to build two primary schools under the umbrella of the Hope Project. Canon believes strongly that children are the future of society and represent the hope for the affected areas; they need the most care and help.
As said by Professor Dong Huijuan, China’s first PhD degree holder in the field of disaster psychology, encouraging children to pick up their books again is the most effective way ?for them to begin to? recover from the trauma of disaster.
Time waits for no man. While helping rebuild schools, the employees of Canon(China) are also spontaneously making donations to be used in purchasing tents and the boards for making prefabricated houses, so as to set up a number of temporary classrooms for the local children, in the hope of meeting their urgent schooling needs.
Another "June 1st" Children's Day is coming. It has been learned that the first batch of temporary classrooms built by the China Youth Development Foundation, including those built with donations from Canon, will be completed on Children's Day as a holiday gift for local children.
Together with the temporary classrooms being sent to the affected areas is the caring heart of all Canon employees—they have included their hopes and wishes in an emotional letter to the children in the affected areas.
