Beijing, China, May 19, 2008-Canon has launched a series of specific disaster relief activities as it is very concerned about the rescue and relief of China's earthquake survivors in Sichuan.. In view that the disaster areas have a shortage of medicines and medical equipment, Canon (China) has donated RMB 3 million worth of medical equipment to the affected areas together with its partner. The equipment was put into use on May 18 to treat Mr. Tang Xiong, the first patient treated by it. Mr Tang Xiong is a doctor of internal medicine from the Hospital of Beichuan County, who had been buried under the rubble for 139 hours before being rescued!
The employees of Canon across the country are also spontaneously working to provide help and assistance to the people in the disaster areas with their own actions by donating money or blood. To date, the total donations in cash or in kind from the Canon Group to China's earthquake areas have come to RMB14.4 million.
All for the people in the disaster areas
With the rescue & relief work going on in the disaster areas, there appeared to be a shortage of medical equipment. Once Canon (China) was aware of that, the decision was immediately made to provide medical support. By teaming up with its partner Huatong, the company donated the Canon CXDI-50G digital X-ray imaging system worth RMB 3 million to the Central Hospital of Mianyang City, and arranged to send it to the frontline of earthquake rescue & relief on May 18. Notably, the first patient treated by the equipment was Mr. Tang Xiong, a doctor of internal medicine from the Hospital of Beichuan County, who had been buried under debris for 139 hours before being rescued. The digital X-ray imaging system performed an accurate diagnosis of him for bone fractures and external injuries, and helped to save precious time for accurate treatment by medical workers. The installation & test process of the entire system was also very smooth. It was completely compatible with the existing medical systems in the Central Hospital of Mianyang City, and was immediately put into use after installation, to contribute to saving lives.
At the same time, the photocopier division of Canon (China) is also engaged in a concerted action with its resellers in response to the call of the company, to launch charity-oriented sales. It promises to donate together with the dealers RMB100 for each unit of the iR Series Multifunctional Digital Device to the orphans in the disaster areas on behalf of the consumers.
Canon employees united in helping the earthquake victims
The employees of Canon in China are also acting to make donations to the disaster areas spontaneously in response to the action of their companies. In just four days, the contributions from them were close to RMB200 thousand. In addition, many employees were also involved in the compensation-free blood donating activity. The employees in the Chengdu branch of Canon (China) have also joined others in providing help to the disaster areas although they also suffered from the earthquake themselves. One employee from the Chengdu branch office, who was donating blood to the victims, said emotionally: "We are all OK. The people in the disaster areas are more in need of our help." These simple words have conveyed the great sense of responsibility and selflessness of the people at Canon. In addition, the production facilities of the Canon Group in Zhuhai, Zhongshan and other regions have also donated money to the disaster areas through their local chamber of the Red Cross.
"As a member of the Chinese community, we are extremely grieved at the earthquake disaster," said Hideki Ozawa, President and Chief Executive Officer of Canon (China), when he was making donations to the Red Cross Society of China on behalf of Canon companies in China. "Assisting people in the affected areas with a helping hand is the unshirkable responsibility of Canon."
The disaster can destroy our homes, but cannot destroy our hearts. The earthquake can destroy our houses, but cannot break our backs. Let's face the disaster together, no matter how big it is; let's walk together, no matter how strong the wind is and how heavy the rain is. Canon and all its employees are willing to work together with all partners, all users and all those with a caring heart to help with the rebuilding efforts of the people in the disaster areas.
Let's get united!
