"As a member of the Chinese community, we are extremely grieved at the earthquake disaster," said Mr. Ozawa. "We, Canon (China) is duty-bound to assist people in the affected areas with a helping hand." He believes that with timely and effective relief efforts of the Chinese Government as well as the selfless support from the public, people in the disaster affected areas will be suitably cared for, and homes destroyed in the earthquake will soon be rebuilt.

Madam Peng Peiyun, Chairman of the China Red Cross, expressed her thanks to Canon. She said: "As a foreign enterprise rooted in China, Canon gave a helping hand to the disaster affected areas as quickly as possible. This has demonstrated Canon's strong sense of corporate social responsibility, and has again proved Canon's attention to and love for China. We appreciate this very much, and I also want to express my sincere thanks to Canon on behalf of the local people!"

In addition to making donations, immediately after the earthquake, Canon(China) contacted its' offices in Chengdu and Chongqing to make sure the local employees were safe, and also organized employees in areas seriously affected by the earthquake to evacuate. To date, Canon employees in all of its sub-companies, offices, and Canon Group's affiliated companies in China have been confirmed safe. Canon hopes that all of its employees, especially those in areas seriously affected by the earthquake, actively cooperate with the disaster relief efforts of the local governments, to ensure the safety of themselves and their families, and to overcome the difficulties together with the local people.

Employees of Canon (China) are also making donations internally in response to the call of the company, to show a caring heart to the victims of China's worst natural disaster in decades. Canon also calls for other companies and individuals to make donations to those areas and to do whatever they can to provide assistance to the local people!

Canon has been practicing the "Kyosei" corporate philosophy, seeking to grow together with the local communities and to handle disasters that arise together with them. In 2003, the company donated medical equipment worth millions of dollars to help Beijing cope with SARS; in 2007, it made donations in kind worth RMB 300 thousand to the earthquake areas in Yunnan; and it also donated RMB 500 thousand to the snow-stricken areas in southern China early this year. Plus the RMB11 million donated today to the earthquake areas in Sichuan, the series philanthropic moves of Canon has demonstrated the company's commitment to its social responsibility. In the future, Canon(China) will continue to work together with the local communities in China, to pay back to society, and to strive to become a really excellent localized Chinese company.
